This week, we explore a rich vein of Indian heritage in our fascinating programme - online now – Gems of India. We examine the power and history of jewels in India, particularly in the Rajasthani cities of Jaipur and Udaipur, from the craftsmen who create them to the maharajas who still wear them today. The thousand-year-old techniques passed down the generations mean that much of the jewels are still hand-cut and hand-set today, and the sumptuous jewels that came from this living tradition had a powerful effect on Western enterprises like Cartier. We hear from experts Dr. Amin Jaffer of Christie’s on the long history and tradition of Indian gemstones and talk to the princess of Udaipur, who sells the designs of local artisans in a boutique on the palace grounds.
